This is real cool but I was kind of bummed that I did not see any startups from Africa. We are the next frontier of investment and with over 1.1 billion people who are facing several challenges that need mobile solutions the place is a gold mine. I hope in the next batch @davemcclure:disqus will consider Njorku as the first African startup : )

It'd be great to connect some of the start-up founders for interviewing sessions with law students in my Entrepreneurial Business Law Clinic (via Skype). Informally, they'd exchange viewpoints about initial legal needs of start-ups, what's needed and what's unhelpful, etc. It builds the skill of the entrepreneurs in dealing with that day in the future when they're undergoing due diligence, and too, provides an opportunity for the law students to develop practice skills they'll use when working with new businesses.
My contact info is thomason.20@osu[dot]edu.

Urgh.
A) Why do we need some canonical "VC" strategy that's going to work in all cases ?
B) Google of Venture = Angellist

I love the sentiment and hardcore stance on shipping. Of the 12 I have been to, the absolute most important piece of the weekend, is identifying who you might have an entrepreneurial future with.

How you brainstorm together, work under pressure, critique, cut features, argue, and ultimately ship with is what gives you insight to who that likely co-founder can be, and you won't ever get that glimpse if the focus for builders isn't on building.

That being said, teams are usually made up of more than just makers, and they have a place too. Whether or not the content of the pitch is viable beyond the weekend, the thinking process and articulation at the end shows how valuable the business person can be as well.

I understand why you put all of the focus on shipping, but I think the ultimate success is finding the most kick-ass and well-balanced team, so at the end of the weekend, when the product AND the business comes together wonderfully, the whole team has a firm starting point.

I'm a SW organizer, facilitator, and attendee, as well as being a maker. In the last 2 years, both of my startups (Freak'n Genius and Giant Thinkwell) have come out of Startup Weekend. Freak'n Genius is currently in the MS Kinect Accelerator, and Giant Thinkwell went through TechStars 2010.

Hopefully we get a chance to cross paths at a future event. :)

Last but not least, God help those who help themselves. We should first be optimistic and karen millen uk can we help ourselves.
