500 Startups now has a portfolio of nine Taiwanese companies, as well as a handful of existing non-Taiwanese portfolio companies with Taipei subsidiaries or branches, and more than a few in the pipeline. I spoke with both our portfolio and non-500 companies to get a sense of why a foreign startup might choose to base their tech development team in Taiwan, and their candid views on the pros and cons, both expected and unexpected, behind such a decision.
