500 Partner Edith Yeung just released her 2018 China Internet Report in partnership with SCMP and Abacus.

This 97-page report includes everything you need to know about China’s internet landscape including major trends such as e-Commerce, Content and Media, Social and Messaging, the Sharing Economy, Artificial Intelligence, Smart Devices, Autonomous Cars, Blockchain, FinTech, Education, Gaming and eSports.

The full report can be downloaded here.

Here are some of our takeaways:

  1. The Chinese internet giants want and need to do everything. Whether it’s building, investing, or acquiring, Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent are present across the internet ecosystem.
  2. China’s internet empowers the population of smaller cities and rural areas. The number of rural internet users in China reached 209 million in 2017 with a penetration rate of 35%.
  3. China’s internet companies are adopting a new ‘Social+’ model, where their business is anchored by a social pillar that drives user engagement and growth. It’s not just e-Commerce platforms, other verticals such as media and education have incorporated these social elements into their business model as well.
  4. Government policy is the visible hand. Success or failure in China’s internet landscape, especially in media or FinTech, is contingent upon government authority.

Download the full report here. Edith will also be hosting a webinar on Tuesday, July 17 at 5pm PT where she’ll cover the key takeaways from the report and take questions from the audience.
