We are on the cusp of moving intelligence from being rare to being abundant. The extraordinary shift will unlock new capabilities to solve problems in all areas of our lives. The promise of AI to impact our welfare, including our physical wellbeing, is one of the most important opportunities in the near horizon. However, as Dario Amodei brilliantly observed, “saying that AI will cure cancer is more a cliche than it is inspiring, and most people think it is deceptive. The thing that will work is *actually curing cancer*.”

When it comes to life sciences, however, we know that intelligence is only one of the required inputs to solve our biggest problems. That is why we are excited to be investors in Warp Sciences, which emerges from stealth today with $215M in funding to tackle the next bottleneck to developing new medicines in the US.

Warp is a US-based chemical contract research organization (CRO) that has pulled together an impressive starting team of experts in AI, chemistry and robotics. Designing a molecule that ultimately ends up in clinic depends on the ability to produce, test, and iterate on experiments. That process is currently limited by physical constraints of the laboratory: equipment, skilled labor, and other resources such as time. As companies increasingly use AI to develop more experiments, our ability to run those experiments in the lab will be the bottleneck.

That is where we believe Warp will have the biggest impact. Every experiment will generate valuable insights about the physical world and how to design and run the next experiment. As the model improves, not only will scientists be able to run more experiments from robotics and automation, they will be able to run better experiments with a model that compounds its learning. Ultimately the data feedback loop paired with automation should get us closer to accelerating the discovery of important medicines.

Speed, quality, and collaboration are compelling on their own merits and worthy objectives for any ambitious team. The fact that they provide frontier capabilities from the US further provides an important option for customers around the world. Having known and worked with Warp co-founder and CEO Kevin Weil, it is no surprise that he has put together a formidable team alongside Sol Reisberg (Terremoto Biosciences), Mano Paluri (Meta FAIR, Llama) and DJ Patil (first U.S. Chief Data Scientist).

We are excited to invest in Warp Sciences with co-investors Lightspeed, IVP, Mayfield, Lux, and many others. Scientific superintelligence will allow us to reason about the physical world, design better experiments, and make discoveries that exceed what we can achieve on our own. On to the next bottleneck!
